Doomed Romance
He: “you are jam on toast…
sweet but sticky.”
She: “your love note
reads like a tract…
all rules to be obeyed”.

Iridescent, her eyes
splendiferous the sparks
they cast, illumining
whole environment…
her merest smile mesmerized
mysterious…a test of men’s
resistance to temptation
and ardent tempest…
Popular with strangers
she’d meet by chance? yes…
if they were important
if they couldn’t see
within her… but I
had view of shadow side–
she was winter
without festive glitter
cold, unyielding as ice
one glance could freeze
the soul…never to forget–

Grief has a flavor…
burnt toast
(burnt everything)
and hostile aftertaste…
crushed by your departure
I’ve no appetite…
even chocolates
taste of ashes–
And mourning has
no sense of time
it resists scheduling
ignores seasons…
within heart perpetual
calendar pages turn, turn
as mourning wears a style
all its own, regardless
of fashion trend…
elaborate sighs of silk
in pale to pewter shadows gray…
that’s what you bequeathed to me–

It began with “hello”
just that
an ordinary greeting
ordinary day
ordinary-looking man–
no, not quite ordinary
he was helpful…
handy in ways
beyond her expertise
so, she thanked him
with her speciality…and
with every traded favor–
his chores, for her
tasty home-cooked meals–
he became more handsome
as she grew ever lovelier…
“hello” changed to
“I can help you with that”
and one day:
“how about we get married?”
she said, “yes”❣

Death arrives
with its own agenda
unique to every
individual…
full of contempt
for life, the winners
and wastrels alike–
merciless, it disregards
any good deeds done
efforts made to invest
in improving lives
of those bereaved
and vast world
that surrounds–
minus one…
be they saint
or sorrowful lost

FROM LINDA:
It’s January 16th, and time for the 16th daily prompt for Just Jot it January 2026. Our prompt today is brought to us by the spectacular Sadje. Thank you, Sadje! Please be sure to visit Sadje’s blog to read her posts and say hello.
Your prompt for JusJoJan January 16th, 2026 is “philosophy.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!
~~🦉~~
Now, I can’t say I’ve heard this straight from the bird’s beak (not even a wize owl’s), but my observation is that crows have a philosophy:
“Don’t let winter stop you from getting down there on the square and picking at whatever treats might be found between chill green grass blades! Picnickers are scarce in January.”
~ Cale

Generation after generation
one son after another
and women as well–
blood of criminality runs
cool through their veins
violence is nothing to them
merely part of day’s routine–
conscienceless, they drink
the dregs of others’ lives
who matter to them not–
No mystery trust
has vanished, become
a dusk mist tinged
with copper, reeking
of rust…fear, dread
and viral suspicion…
predators surround–
across globe red rain
drips like weeping
from neighboring trees
since Cain, in cursing rage
murdered his brother…
deep root of the red tree

Back in my day we lived for, and by, coupons for groceries and other essentials. It was a thrill to match them with our current needs, thinking about all we could buy on a stretched budget.
Today my crazy ageing brain wandered to “weird coupons”…
It might be exciting to wake up
some days and collect a different
kind of coupons from the mailbox
not ones for coffee or catfood or
likely-freezer-burn cabbage rolls–
Imagine the relief to find savings
on things like knots and wrinkles
typical of normal days
(abnormal ones not included)–
Here are a few you might
be interested in:
50% off negative feedback
“2 for 1” sale on profanity
(limited quantities)
10% off artificial smiles
but Look! there’s a
“manager’s overstock”
basket of eye-rolling…
The best one, to me, would be
75% off that troublesome
situation I still haven’t
found a positive and doable
solution for.
~ Cale
(If I’ve lost you, the idea is that all these things would be less distressing than usual…doable😉)
